Marijuana legalization shows why bold ideas work
Progressives must take big, bold policy stances and work to shape public opinion.
It’s worth pausing to contemplate one of the most consequential legislative changes in years: Canada is now one of the few countries to fully legalize marijuana.
How we got to this point wasn’t easy.
In 2014 only 37% of Canadians said marijuana should be legalized. It wasn’t an issue on most people’s radar. Anyone running on marijuana legalization was relegated to the fringes of acceptable political discourse. Fast-forward to 2017 and support for marijuana legalization is supported by 7 in 10 voters.
