Do People Get Paid What They Deserve?
In this episode of How To Argue With Conservatives, we ask if people get paid what they deserve. How do we determine what people deserve to get? And is the amount of money people make really grounded in any concept of “desert”?
Taylor discusses several popular conceptions of desert, and explains how none of them are reflected in how people are compensated in the economy today.
But beyond this, we have good reason to question whether it would make sense to compensate people based on some notion of desert.
Instead we ought to think of “what people deserve” as a function of their inherent humanity, and distribute resources accordingly.
