In 1936, British citizens defeated fascism in the famous Battle of Cable Street. Almost a century later, far-right fascist forces are back. Cable Street explores the current global rise of the far-right and fascism: what is driving this phenomenon, where is it leading, and how can progressives respond?

Episode #4: Canada Doesn’t Need a Wall

June 22, 2018

Immigration law expert Sharry Aiken explains Canada's border "crisis" myth, Trump's family separation policy and the need for a progressive approach to borders.

Every day, the western world is confronted by new stories of refugees fleeing for safety, border crackdowns, and now, governments separating asylum-seeking families.

Canada isn’t immune. As asylum seekers cross our border seeking refuge, the media, led by the Toronto Sun and The Rebel, claim that we are facing a border crisis.

Not true says The Cable Street guest Sharry Aikin, an immigration and refugee expert. In fact, our border is doing fine – what is different are certain elements in soceity weaponizing these stories to suit their own purpose.

In this episode of Cable Street, immigration policy is put under the microscope, including the problems caused by the Safe Third Party Agreement with the U.S.,  myths perpetrated by the far-right, and what a progressive immigration system would look like.
